Every year hundreds of young people in our community gain the experience of creating their own musical works, which are then performed by nearly a thousand student musicians and heard by thousands of audience members made up of parents, teachers and student peers.
The Creation Project provides composers-in-residence to Milwaukee Schools and community groups such as the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra and results in original concerts of the students’ works.
Through a ten week residency, students learn:
-
How harmony and melody interact
-
How to construct rhythm
-
To understand the significance of musical form/composition theory
-
How to orchestrate for an ensemble
Equally important, young people have the chance to put their imaginations to work, become innovators, work together to problem solve, and gain the pride in ownership of music they create themselves.
Additional features of the Creation Project:
-
National composers work in residence with PM and Creation Project schools to discuss their music and careers
-
Select student compositions are performed at PM concerts
-
Student compositions are performed at the biennial MPS music festival
