David Bloom is founding co-artistic director of Contemporaneous, a New York-based ensemble of 21 musicians dedicated to performing the most exciting music of the present moment, and recently lauded in New York Times for a “ferocious, focused performance.” A devoted advocate for new music, he regularly works with living composers to bring new and recent works to life.
David has conducted over 120 world premieres at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, (le) poisson rouge, Merkin Concert Hall, and the Bang on a Can Marathon. He is a frequent guest conductor for NOW Ensemble, Hotel Elefant, JACK Quartet, Mantra Percussion, and TILT Brass, among others. He has worked with such composers as Donnacha Dennehy, Michael Harrison, Gabrielle Herbst, Yotam Haber, Dylan Mattingly, Andrew Norman, and Aaron Seigel and regularly works outside of the classical realm with such artists as Jherek Bischoff, David Byrne, and Courtney Love.
Especially active as a conductor of new opera throughout the US and Canada, David currently serves as music director on three traveling productions of works by Judd Greenstein, Anthony Gatto, and Todd Almond. He has recorded for the Innova, New Amsterdam, Mexican Summer, Mona, and Starkland labels. Also a passionate teaching artist, David is a conductor for Face the Music and Special Music School, and along with Contemporaneous, he is in residence at his alma mater, Bard College.
Praised by the New York Times as “meticulous and expressive,” Percussionist and general music maker Matt Evans dedicates himself to the performance and proliferation of contemporary art music of any kind. He performs regularly with new music groups such as Contemporaneous and Bearthoven while creating work with TIGUE, Rokenri and others. Matt has performed around the country at acclaimed venues such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Kitchen and New York City’s Museum of Modern Art and has been a featured performer on Q2 Music, the Contagious Sounds Series, Make Music New York, the MATA Festival, the Tribeca New Music Festival and Big Ears Festival. Currently residing in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Matt produces Selective Truths, a neighborhood warehouse concert series, and can generally be found walking the streets listening to music and giving high fives.

A fast-rising composer on the contemporary music scene, Missy Mazzoli’s talent draws audiences equally into concert halls and rock clubs. Her unique music reflects a trend among composers of her generation who combine styles, writing music for the omnivorous audiences of the 21st century. She inhabits a gorgeous and mysterious sound-world that melds indie-rock sensibilities with formal training from Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding, Richard Ayers, and others. Practically speaking, she amasses music in layers not normally found together but in ways that create matchless vertical harmonies.
Recently deemed "one of the more consistently inventive, surprising composers now working in New York" by The New York Times, and "Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart" by Time Out New York, her music has been performed all over the world by Present Music, the Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird, the American Composers Orchestra, New York City Opera, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, NOW Ensemble, and many others.
A native of Louisville, KY, Jeremy Podgursky’s music has been featured in venues and festivals in the United States, Europe and Japan. His compositions have been performed, premiered, and read by groups such as Alarm Will Sound, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Indiana University New Music Ensemble, Contemporaneous, Square Peg Round Hole, Lost Dog New Music Ensemble, Holographic, Peabody Modern Orchestra, and NewEar New Music Ensemble. Some of his awards and honors come from the American Academy Of Arts And Letters, Copland House Residency Award, Indiana University JSoM Dean’s Prize, Fromm Music Foundation, Finale/American Composers Forum/Eighth Blackbird, Mizzou New Music Festival, American Composers Orchestra/Earshot, Northridge Prize For Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra Composers Institute, and National SCI/ASCAP Commissioning Competition.
Jeremy received his B.M. and M.M. in music composition and piano from the University of Louisville. He taught music theory/aural skills and private composition lessons at the University of Louisville, and created and taught multiple after-school composition programs in Louisville-area public high schools. Currently located in Bloomington, IN, Jeremy is a doctoral candidate (D.M.) at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University where he received a Jacobs Doctoral Fellowship.
Along with composer Ryan Chase and conductor Ben Bolter, Jeremy is the co-founder of a new music project in Bloomington, IN called HOLOGRAPHIC. The project draws from a pool of the JSoM’s finest performers, with concerts held in alternative venues. Jeremy was the founder/singer/songwriter/guitarist of the psychedelic/indie rock band THE PENNIES. Having shared the stages with the likes of My Morning Jacket, Mike Watt, The Grifters, Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, and the Apples in Stereo, THE PENNIES entertained audiences all over the U.S. and Europe.
Norman is a Los Angeles-based composer of orchestral, chamber, and vocal music. A lifelong enthusiast for all things architectural, Andrew writes music that is often inspired by patterns and textures he encounters in the visual world. He has a passion for musical notation, its long history, and the many ways its boundaries can be pushed to find new modes of expression. He also loves collaborating with performers to explore the act of interpreting notation and he is fascinated by the translation of written symbols into physical gesture and sound. Andrew is increasingly interested in story-telling in music, and specifically in the ways non-linear, narrative-scrambling techniques from cinema, television, and video games might intersect with traditional symphonic forms. His distinctive, often fragmented and highly energetic voice has been cited in the New York Times for its “daring juxtapositions and dazzling colors,” in the Boston Globe for its “staggering imagination,” and in the L.A. Times for its “Chaplinesque” wit.
In recent seasons, Andrew’s chamber music has been featured at the Bang on a Can Marathon, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Wordless Music Series, the CONTACT! series, the Ojai Festival, the MATA Festival, the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music, the Green Umbrella series, the Monday Evening Concerts, and the Aspen Music Festival. In May of 2010, the Berlin Philharmonic’s Scharoun Ensemble presented a portrait concert of Andrew’s music entitled “Melting Architecture.”
Andrew is a committed educator who enjoys helping people of all ages explore and create music. He has written pieces to be performed by and for the young, and has held educational residencies with various institutions across the country, including a week-long outreach visit with the Des Moines Symphony and a two-year stint with the schools in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley. Andrew joined the faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music in 2013, and he is thrilled to serve as the new director of the L.A. Phil’s Composer Fellowship Program for high school composers.
David Lang is one of the most highly-esteemed and performed American composers writing today. His works have been performed around the world in most of the great concert halls.
Lang's simple song #3, written as part of his score for Paolo Sorrentino's acclaimed film YOUTH, received many awards nominations in 2016, including the Academy Award and Golden Globe.
His the little match girl passion won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in music. Based on a fable by Hans Christian Andersen and Lang’s own rewriting of the libretto to Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion, the recording of the piece was awarded a 2010 Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance. Lang has also been the recipient of the Rome Prize, Le Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, and Musical America's 2013 Composer of the Year.
Lang’s tenure as 2013-14 Debs Chair Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall saw his critically-acclaimed festival, collected stories, showcase different modes of storytelling in music. This season Lang sees the premiere of his chamber opera Anatomy Theatre at LA Opera, the 4th annual performance of the little match girl passion to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the UK premieres of the national anthems with the London Symphony and mystery sonatas at Wigmore Hall, as well as residencies at the Strings of Autumn Festival in Prague, the Winnipeg New Music Festival, and Baldwin-Wallace College.
Lang’s music is used regularly for ballet and modern dance around the world by such choreographers as Twyla Tharp, Susan Marshall, Edouard Lock, and Benjamin Millepied, who choreographed a new piece by Lang for the LA Dance Project at BAM in 2014. Lang’s film work includes the score for Jonathan Parker’s (Untitled), the music for the award-winning documentary The Woodmans, and the string arrangements for Requiem for a Dream, performed by the Kronos Quartet. His music is also on the soundtrack for Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning La Grande Bellezza and the director’s upcoming film, Youth. In addition to his work as a composer is Professor of Composition at the Yale School of Music.

Middle Eastern-influenced psychedelic grooves meets California surf rock! Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Painted Caves have earned a reputation for their highly original, Arab-American music and mesmerizing live performances. Built on a foundation of Western experimentation and Middle-Eastern tradition, the group uses traditional folk and jazz instruments (oud, daf, trumpet, flute) as a base and focal point against a backdrop of hypnotic rhythm (guitar, bass, percussion) and dreamy, uplifting songwriting. Seamlessly melding shoegaze distortion with delicate microtones and vocal harmonies, their music transports the listener from the sands of the North African desert to the sunny beaches of Baja California and the great Ocean beyond, with infectious grooves and lyrical hooks keeping company on a musical journey that is inspiring, reflective, and celebratory.
They have made frequent appearances at the Milwaukee Art Museum and Chill on the Hill, and at Madison's La Fete de Marquette '13, the Lake Moon Festival '14, and Summer Soulstice Festival '14. The group made their international debut at the Amarrass Music Festival in New Delhi, India in Nov 2014 and play select dates around the Midwest in Summer/Fall 2015.
